And Now for some news ….

CAM Therapy Usage

A recent study published in Health Affairs, looked at the current usage of CAM Therapies.

Complementary and alternative medicine services in the United States are an approximately $9 billion market each year, equal to 3 percent of national ambulatory health care expenditures.

Unlike conventional allopathic health care, complementary and alternative medicine is primarily paid for out of pocket, although some services are covered by most health insurance.

Examining trends in demand for complementary and alternative medicine services in the United States reported in the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey during 2002–08, the authors found that use of and spending on these services, previously on the rise, have largely plateaued.

The higher proportion of out-of-pocket responsibility for payment for services may explain the lack of growth. Our findings suggest that any attempt to reduce national health care spending by eliminating coverage for complementary and alternative medicine would have little impact at best.

Should some forms of complementary and alternative medicine—for example, chiropractic care for back pain—be proven more efficient than allopathic and specialty medicine, the inclusion of complementary and alternative medicine providers in new delivery systems such as accountable care organizations could help slow growth in national health care spending.

White Rice and Type 2 Diabetes Risk

A recent study was published in the British Journal of Medicine to summarize evidence on the association between white rice consumption and risk of type 2 diabetes and to quantify the potential dose-response relation.

Four articles were identified that included seven distinct prospective cohort analyses in Asian and Western populations for this study. A total of 13 284 incident cases of type 2 diabetes were ascertained among 352 384 participants with follow-up periods ranging from 4 to 22 years.

Asian (Chinese and Japanese) populations had much higher white rice consumption levels than did Western populations (average intake levels were three to four servings/day versus one to two servings/week).

The study concluded that higher consumption of white rice is associated with a significantly increased risk of type 2 diabetes, especially in Asian (Chinese and Japanese) populations.

Diet Sodas and Diabetes

It has been extensively shown, mainly in US populations, that sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) are associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D), but less is known about the effects of artificially sweetened beverages (ASBs).

The Authors of a recent study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition evaluated the association between self-reported sugar-sweetened beverages, artificially sweetened beverages, and 100% fruit juice consumption and T2D risk over 14 y of follow-up in a French Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition cohort.

The study concluded that both sugar-sweetened beverages consumption and artificially sweetened beverages consumption were associated with increased T2D risk. We cannot rule out that factors other than artificially sweetened beverages consumption that we did not control for are responsible for the association with diabetes, and randomized trials are required to prove a causal link between artificially sweetened beverages consumption and T2D.

As always, discuss all Nutritional questions with your Qualified Health Care Professional.
