And Now for some news ….
RSS Info – In this edition of HealthBeat, we discuss Pass the Grain, Spare the Brain, And Finally, a Story about Inflammatory Cytokines and Disc Disease.
Pass the Grain, Spare the Brain
An editorial in the September 2007 issue of the journal Neurology, discussed the effects that the Western Diet has on the development of the dementia known as Alzheimer’s disease.
Alzheimer disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia with an estimated US prevalence of over 5 million. Recent discoveries have focused on identifying biomarkers for early detection of disease and a great deal of information is available on amyloid processing.
However, to date, there have been few data to suggest how the progressive course of AD can be modified in symptomatic patients for clinically meaningful outcomes.
The study discussed in this editorial reported on the benefit of adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MeDi) on reducing mortality in AD. Higher adherence to MeDi was associated with lower mortality in AD with a positive dose-response effect.
The “discovery” that diet adherence may provide protective benefits across a number of chronic diseases may lead to increased understanding of environmental and social adaptations that have occurred in the transition form “hunter-gatherer” diets to diets and lifestyles more common to Western societies (trans fats, processed foods, “refined” sugars”, sedentary life-styles).
These changes have been linked to the increased prevalence of cardiovascular disease and may in part lead to increased incidence of other chronic diseases of the older adult, such as AD.
It is interesting that considering all the medical and pharmaceutical advances made in the last century, perhaps the most important things we can still tell our patients, regardless of why them come to the office, is to stay mentally active and physically fit and to eat a healthy and balanced diet.
Remember to discuss all Nutritional Recommendations with your Qualified Health Care Professional.

Inflammatory Cytokines and Disc Disease
A study in the July 2014 issue of the journal Spine, discusses the efficacy of an IKKβ inhibitor on inflammatory cytokine levels in injured IVDs or on neuropeptide levels in the dorsal root ganglia (DRG) neurons innervating injured IVDs in rats.
Multiple studies have suggested that upregulation of inflammatory cytokines in damaged IVDs causes discogenic low back pain. The efficacy of blocking individual inflammatory cytokines is limited; however, inflammatory cytokine stimuli often require IKKβ to activate nuclear factor-k B.
The study concluded that Injury-induced upregulation of inflammatory cytokines within IVDs and increased levels of neuropeptides within DRG neurons can be suppressed by inhibiting IKKβ.
