Kinesio Taping and Chronic LBP

The aim of the study published in the journal Spine, was to investigate the effectiveness of Kinesio taping application on pain, functional disability, and trunk flexion range of motion (ROM) in patients with chronic nonspecific low back pain (chronic NSLBP).

Kinesio taping is a therapeutic tool used for treatment of chronic NSLBP. However, there is little scientific evidence that describes its clinical efficacy.

Forty-four patients with chronic NSLBP were randomized into experimental group and placebo group. The experimental group was treated with Erector Spinae Taping, whereas the placebo group was treated with placebo taping.

The study concluded that Kinesio taping reduces pain and disability and improves trunk flexion ROM after 2 weeks of application. However, these effects were very small to be considered clinically relevant and meaningful when compared with placebo taping.

LBP and Reliable Core Stability Assessment Battery

The objective of a study published in the journal Spine, was to examine the intra-rater (test-retest) reliability of the core stability related tests and to develop a reliable core stability assessment battery.

Studies suggest that core stability exercises may improve function and decrease pain in patients with nonspecific low back pain (LBP). Reliable clinical tests are required to implement adequate rehabilitation and to evaluate results of these interventions.

The results of the study indicated that the partial curl-up test (strength), side bridge and trunk flexor tests (endurance), sit-and-reach test (flexibility), single-legged hop, and lateral step-down (functional), unilateral stance test with eyes open (motor control) had very high intra-rater reliability.

A core stability assessment battery involving these tests can be used in patients with nonspecific LBP to assess all components of core stability.

Physical Exercise and Brain Health

A study recently published in the Journal of Physiology looked at the various types of exercise and its relationship to the health of the brain.

Aerobic exercise, such as running, has positive effects on brain structure and function, such as adult hippocampal neurogenesis (AHN) and learning.

Whether high-intensity interval training (HIT), referring to alternating short bouts of very intense anaerobic exercise with recovery periods, or anaerobic resistance training (RT) has similar effects on AHN is unclear.

In addition, individual genetic variation in the overall response to physical exercise is likely to play a part in the effects of exercise on AHN but is less well studied.

The study’s conclusion suggest that physical exercise promotes AHN most effectively if the exercise is aerobic and sustained, especially when accompanied by a heightened genetic predisposition for response to physical exercise.

Gluteal muscle activation during running in females

Hip and knee joint motion in the transverse and frontal plane during running may increase patellofemoral joint stress and contribute to the etiology of patellofemoral joint pain.

The authors of a study published in the journal Clinical Biomechanics, evaluated the association between these kinematics and the magnitude and timing of gluteus medius and maximus activity during running in females with patellofemoral pain.

The authors also compared the magnitude and timing of gluteal muscle activity during running between females with and without patellofemoral pain.

Females with patellofemoral pain demonstrated delayed and shorter gluteus medius activation than females without knee pain during running.

The magnitude and timing of gluteus maximus activation was not different between groups. Greater hip adduction and internal rotation excursion was correlated with later gluteus medius and gluteus maximus onset, respectively.

The study concluded that neuromuscular control differences of the gluteal muscles appear to exist among females with patellofemoral pain during running.

Interventions to facilitate earlier activation of these muscles may be warranted among females with patellofemoral pain who demonstrate altered running kinematics.
