ICD-10 Updates for October 1st

Doctors of chiropractic should be aware that there are some significant updates regarding ICD-10 that go into effect Oct. 1, 2016 due to the partial code freeze being lifted.

Of particular interest to DCs is the addition of numerous injury codes (chapter 19), musculoskeletal codes (chapter 13), and clarifications on “Excludes” notes and laterality.

Doctors should review the 2017 ICD-10-CM Guidelines to familiarize themselves with the changes and make sure that all ICD-10 reference material is up to date.

Surf to our Show Notes for relevant ICD-10 links related to these updated codes – http://www.nysca.com/?id=1176

Animal vs Plant Protein and Mortality

Defining what represents a macronutritionally balanced diet remains an open question and a high priority in nutrition research.

Although the amount of protein may have specific effects, from a broader dietary perspective, the choice of protein sources will inevitably influence other components of diet and may be a critical determinant for the health outcome.

The objective of a study recently published in JAMA, was to examine the associations of animal and plant protein intake with the risk for mortality.

This prospective cohort study of US health care professionals included 131,342 participants from the Nurses’ Health Study (1980 to end of follow-up on June 1, 2012) and Health Professionals Follow-up Study (1986 to end of follow-up on January 31, 2012).

Animal and plant protein intake was assessed by regularly updated validated food frequency questionnaires.

The study concluded that high animal protein intake was positively associated with mortality and high plant protein intake was inversely associated with mortality, especially among individuals with at least 1 lifestyle risk factor.

Substitution of plant protein for animal protein, especially that from processed red meat, was associated with lower mortality, suggesting the importance of protein source.

As always, discuss all Nutritional recommendations with your Qualified Health Care Provider.
