Physical activity level as a predictor of healthy and chronic disease-free life expectancy between ages 50 and 75

Physical activity promotes healthy aging. However, little is known about the relationship between physical activity levels and healthy and chronic disease-free life expectancy (LE).

A recent study was published in the journal Age and Ageing, with the aim was to examine healthy and chronic disease-free LE between ages 50 and 75 and across various levels of physical activity by sex and different occupational statuses.

A clear dose–response relationship between higher physical activity levels and increased healthy and chronic disease-free LE in men and women, and within occupational statuses was found. On average, vigorously active men and women lived 6.3 years longer in good health and 2.9 years longer without chronic diseases between ages 50 and 75 compared to inactive individuals.

The study concluded that higher levels of physical activity increase healthy and chronic disease-free years similarly in men and women, but more among persons with low than with high occupational status.

Late bedtimes, short sleeping time, and longtime video-game playing are associated with low back pain in school-aged athletes

Low back pain is a significant problem for school-aged athletes. Although some risk factors relating to sports activities have been reported, the effect of lifestyles on low back pain in school-aged athletes is not clear.

The purpose of a recent study published in the European Spine Journal, was to elucidate the association between lifestyles, such as wake-up time, bedtime, sleeping time, and TV-viewing or video-game-playing time per day and low back pain of school-aged athletes.

The results of the study found that the frequency of low back pain was 5.0%. Late bedtime, short sleeping time, and long video-game-playing time per day were significantly associated with low back pain. There was no significant association between low back pain and wake-up time or TV-viewing time per day.

The study concluded that unhealthy life-style choices, such as late bedtimes, short sleeping time, and longtime video-game playing, were associated with low back pain in school-aged athletes.
