Chiropractic and Covid-19 Update
Following up with our last podcast, more information has been released related to Chiropractic Practice and patient contact during the current Pandemic crisis.
On Friday, March 20, 2020, the US Office for Civil Rights (OCR), part of the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), issued guidance, in the form of an FAQ, related to conducting telecommunications from a remote setting with patients.
Of note is the easement of HIPAA requirements in connection with their good faith provision of telehealth using communication technologies during the COVID-19 nationwide public health emergency.
Some of the FAQs include:
- What covered entities are included and excluded under the Notification?
- Which parts of the HIPAA Rules are included in the Notification?
- Does the Notification apply to violations of 42 CFR Part 2, the HHS regulation that protects the confidentiality of substance use disorder patient records?
- When does the Notification expire?
- Where can health care providers conduct telehealth?
- What is a “non-public facing” remote communication product?
On March 23rd, the New York State Chiropractic Association issued a press release, which read in part “your community needs your service in public health. Non-essential patient care may be best delayed until after this crisis passes. The NYSCA recommends that all chiropractic practices see patients for urgent, acute, and necessary care and recommends postponing/ rescheduling performance of elective care, wellness, and preventative care at this time.”
Again, COT urges all Healthcare practitioners to stay safe and practice patient contact in accordance with government suggestions.

Workplace Rest Breaks and Injury Prevention
A recent study, published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, examined the relationship between long working hours, rest breaks, and work-related injuries.
Work-related injuries were significantly associated with long working hours.
Stratified by rest breaks, the risk of work-related injuries increased with increasing working hours in a dose–response pattern among those with insufficient rest breaks, while the risk was not significant among those with sufficient rest breaks.
The study concluded that it is important to provide sufficient rest breaks to prevent work-related injuries among workers with long working hours.
