Eating Fruit Protects against Diabetes

A recent study published in the journal PLOS Medicine, looked at the relationship of eating Fruit and how it Protects Against Diabetes.

Eating fresh fruit every day was linked with a lower risk for diabetes and diabetes-related vascular complications in a Chinese epidemiological study that included half a million people.

Among individuals without diabetes at baseline, daily fruit consumption was associated with a 12% lower risk for getting diabetes compared to never or rarely eating fresh fruit.

As for the possible mechanisms underlying the study’s findings, the natural sugars in fruit may not be metabolized in the same way as refined sugars, according to investigators.

In addition, fruit is a good source of dietary fiber, minerals, and antioxidants, “which may work synergistically to confer several benefits on metabolism and modulation of the composition and metabolic activity of gut microbiota, which could reduce the risk of diabetes as well as of vascular complications among those who have already developed diabetes.”

Limitations of the study included that its dietary questionnaire was not validated against another reference method, and that it did not distinguish among different types of fruit the participants consumed.

The study provides “strong evidence in support of current dietary guidelines that fresh fruit consumption should be recommended for all, including those with diabetes,” the investigators concluded.

As always, discuss all Nutritional Recommendations with your Qualified Health Care Provider.

Gluteal Tendinopathy

Gluteal tendinopathy (GT) is a source of lateral hip pain, yet common clinical diagnostic tests have limited validity.

Patients with Gluteal tendinopathy are often misdiagnosed, resulting in inappropriate management, including surgery.

A recent study, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, determined the diagnostic utility of clinical tests for Gluteal tendinopathy, using MRI as the reference standard.

65 participants with lateral hip pain were examined to evaluate the ability of clinical tests to detect MRI-determined Gluteal tendinopathy (an increase in intratendinous signal intensity on T2-weighted images).

Palpation of the greater trochanter and several clinical pain provocation tests applying compressive and tensile loads on the gluteal tendons were investigated.

MRI <findings> of the painful hip, was examined by a radiologist, blind to clinical findings.

The study concluded that keeping in mind that the sample size was small (i.e., possibly underpowered for indices of diagnostic utility with low precision), the results of this study indicate that a patient who reports lateral hip pain within 30 s of single-leg-standing is very likely to have Gluteal tendinopathy.

Patients with lateral hip pain who are not palpably tender over the greater trochanter are unlikely to have MRI-detected Gluteal tendinopathy.

Testing Grip Strength for Disease

Evidence highlights the importance of muscular strength as a protective factor for health and function across aging populations.

The purpose of a study published in the Journals of Gerontology, was to examine the extent to which low normalized grip strength (NGS) serves as a biomarker for both cardiometabolic disease and physical disability in U.S. and Chinese adults.

Strength was assessed using a handgrip dynamometer, and was normalized to body mass.

The study concluded that normalized grip strength was robustly associated with both cardiometabolic disease risk and physical disabilities in U.S. and Chinese aging adults.

Diabetes and Climate Change

Rising global temperatures might contribute to the current worldwide diabetes epidemic, as higher ambient temperature can negatively impact glucose metabolism via a reduction in brown adipose tissue activity.

Therefore, the authors of a recent study published in BMJ Journals, examined the association between outdoor temperature and diabetes incidence in the USA as well as the prevalence of glucose intolerance worldwide.

On a global scale, the authors performed a meta-regression analysis to assess the association between mean annual temperature and the prevalence of glucose intolerance.

The results demonstrated that, on average, per 1°C increase in temperature, age-adjusted diabetes incidence increased.

Similarly, the worldwide prevalence of glucose intolerance increased per 1°C rise in temperature. These associations persisted after adjustment for obesity.

The study’s findings indicate that the diabetes incidence rate in the USA and prevalence of glucose intolerance worldwide increase with higher outdoor temperature.

And Now for some news ….

MRI Findings of Disc Degeneration are More Prevalent in Adults with Low Back Pain than in Asymptomatic Controls

Imaging features of spine degeneration are common in symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals.

The authors of a recent study, published in the journal Spine, compared the prevalence of MR imaging features of lumbar spine degeneration in adults 50 years of age and younger with and without self-reported low back pain.

The authors performed a meta-analysis of studies reporting the prevalence of degenerative lumbar spine MR imaging findings in asymptomatic and symptomatic adults 50 years of age or younger.

Symptomatic individuals had axial low back pain with or without radicular symptoms.

The study concluded that Meta-analysis demonstrates that MR imaging evidence of disc bulge, degeneration, extrusion, protrusion, Modic 1 changes, and spondylolysis are more prevalent in adults 50 years of age or younger with back pain compared with asymptomatic individuals.

Acute Headache Attributed to Whiplash

A recent study published in the European Spine Journal, tested the association between arcuate foramen (AF) in the first cervical vertebra with acute headache attributed to whiplash.

This was a retrospective study of 128 patients that suffered a whiplash.

The presence or absence of arcuate foramen was recorded after a radiographic study, as well as the presence or absence of acute headache after the whiplash.

The results found that the frequency of arcuate foramen was 17.2%. Patients with bilateral arcuate foramen presented a significant increase in the frequency of acute headache in comparison with the non- arcuate foramen group.

The study concluded that the presence of bilateral arcuate foramen is associated to an increased frequency of acute headache after suffering a whiplash, information of interest for the attention to these patients.
